KEY STAGE 1

Year 1 (Children must be aged 5+ by 1st of October)

Year 2 (Children must be aged 6+ by 1st of October)

Year 3 (Children must be aged 7+ by 1st of October)

In Key Stage 1 we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), coupled with the core subjects from the UK National Curriculum. The IPC is a comprehensive, exciting, thematic, and cross curricular process of education. The IPC is flexible and can be adapted to children’s interests and level of understanding. The IPC is a fully integrated curriculum that offers learning across a broad range of topics. Children at LIS will experience a holistic and thorough educational experience that will put them in a good position for the rest of their academic lives.

We adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of our learners and to reflect our unique position in Egypt. Our curriculum provides the structure for learners to participate in a wide range of activities and trips; educating them in a well-rounded manner that encourages the children to develop lifelong knowledge, skills and understanding.

Teaching and learning at KS1 is focused on providing an experience that is almost identical to that being offered in any International School. Education  is supported by a variety of premium quality resources.

Through a well-structured framework set by the UK Department of Education, KS1 School students develop their academic skills. These skills are complemented by reading, writing, listening and interacting. We believe that it is at this age that the love of reading takes root and then flourishes throughout the years. Therefore, we have different forms of libraries; a school library, a classroom library, and an e-library that house a variety of books for different interests to encourage children, prosper their development, and complement the reading requirements set out in the framework.

Furthermore, events throughout the year play a big role in students’ curiosity and engagement as they develop different skills. Students get to be exposed to different cultures, different ways of research, and all through a fun, stress-free experience.

CLASSROOMS & FACILITIES

Year 1 & 2 classes are based in spacious, colorful classrooms around one side of the shady activities’ courtyard. Teachers use this area as an extension of the classrooms and plan a range of courtyard activities using the art and craft facilities, sand, water, role-play, and other action-learning opportunities. An experienced homeroom teacher is responsible for each Year class and is supported by a full-time teaching assistant. All pupils have access to the school field, playgrounds and adventure play areas which challenge and develop their gross motor skills.

Our classrooms are built fit for purpose to ensure the best learning experience; therefore they are spacious, colorful, and vibrant. Classes are mostly center-based, where children sit in groups working on different tasks in a group or individually. They are located in separate connected buildings on the school premises and have their own facilities including bathrooms, computing labs, and outdoor play areas.

LEARNING AREAS

The learning areas for Key Stage One are stimulating, beautiful and fun, encouraging children to play together. Whilst still supporting and enabling the critical social and learning behaviors from the Foundation Stage, children in Key Stage 1 begin to develop more sophisticated skills as they increase their confidence.

Learning in Year 1 & 2 maintains a play-based, inquiry-driven model, but with slightly more structure. Planned independent and pupil-led approaches ensure that our children’s individual contributions are valued and that they grow in confidence as they begin to realize their value and contribution to the wider school community. Children acquire knowledge and skills through questioning, exploring and discovery.
